What happens when a team is struck hard with the flu and effects the outcome of their season? Should we cancel the game and reschedule it for a later date or make the team play with what they have? In the Cross-Country state finals Jackson High School was hit hard by the flu and ended up losing the state title. I am not taking anything away from Ferris, who won the race, but is it truly fair to Jackson’s team? This is a tough question, but for now all coaches can do is become educated on how to keep your players from getting sick. Coaches must be smart and one player gets sick, SEND HIM/HER HOME! Do not let one players sickness turn into 6 players getting sick. Scouting the flu is more important this year than scouting your opponent, so do your research and play it smart, your season is depending on it.

This post is a lot different from the others. The Seattle high school athletic community lost a great man in O’Dea’s head boys basketball coach Phil Lumpkin. Phil Lumpkin the long time O’Dea basketball coach and NBA player was found dead over the weekend at his home. Lumpkin was a beloved figure in the community and turned countless boys into men at his time with O’Dea. Seattle Athletic Apparel would like to send our thoughts and prayers to the Lumpkin family, O’Dea Basketball team and to the entire Seattle Athletic Community. Lumpkin was loved by many but respected by all throughout the Metro League and will be truly missed.

University of Washington (UW) proposed a new three year contract with the University of Gonzaga today to renew one of the great northwest basketball rivalries. Gonzaga has dominated the matchup going 8-2, leading the UW to chicken out of the contract a few years back. Many UW fans will tell you that they tried to renew the contract but they wanted it played in Seattle at the Key Arena every year. Of course the Zags with a brand new arena on campus would not take this deal. Now that UW thinks they can play with Gonzaga they want to renew the rivalry again. I hope UW knows what they are getting into with the short-tempered players like Venoy Overton and Isaiah Thomas going into the hostile environment in Spokane. It should be fun to watch these teams play once again!

Kingco Basketball Preview 2009/2010

Mount Si = The Wildcats enter the season as the league favorite. Mount Si returns all five starters from a team that finished 2nd last season. Tanner Riley the league leading score returns along with James Lawson, Kingco’s leading rebounder. The challenge for Mount Si will be if they are able to handle full court pressure that they certainly will encounter in the District playoffs.

Bellevue = Bellevue returns the Kingco League Most Valuable Player in Aaron Bright. Last season Bright was successful in leading the Wolverines to a disappointing 3rd place finish in the state tournament. Four of the five starting players have graduated but Chris O’Connor is welcoming a large number of talented players from his undefeated junior varsity team.

Mercer Island = Mercer Island is the this years Kingco “mystery” team. They graduated all 5 starters and Ed Pepple, the Islander long time coach retired. On paper Mercer Island looks to be in a rebuilding mode, but over the last 30 years the Islander have displayed remarkable consistency. Look for MI to start off slow and gain momentum as the season progresses.

Sammamish = The Totems look to make great progress this season. After suffering through 3 disappointing seasons the Totems look to make a statement this season. Four of five starters return led by Danny Wruble and Anthony Do. The Totems look to get production from three sophomores who saw considerable action last season as freshman. Sami Jajour, John Steinberg and George Valle look to make their presence known in a competitive league this year.

Juanita = Juanita is entering its second season at the Kingco 3A level. Last year the Rebels struggled but did make the playoffs. The Rebels will play hard but it will be difficult for this young squad to climb the Kingco ladder. Look for the Rebels to again make the playoffs and pull off a few surprises.

Liberty = Liberty enters the season with a new coach and a very young but talented team. Last season the Patriots made a late season run by winning 3 or 4 Kingco lead games to qualify for the District tournament. This season the Patriots will be lead by Jason Wilson their all-everything junior forward.

Interlake = The Saints seem to be entering another rebuilding season. They finished last in Kingco in 2009 but have high hopes with the return leading rebounder and scorer, Tim McDonald. The Saints hope to qualify for the 2A District tournament and must win at least half of the non-league games.
